RSU 5 is developing a new strategic plan to guide education in the district for years to come, and the RSU wants the people of Durham, Freeport and Pownal to weigh in.
A committee is working to draft a new mission statement, vision and strategic plan for the RSU and have developed a short, eight-question survey to learn more about how their friends and neighbors of all ages and backgrounds feel about our local schools, as well as how they want education to look in the district in the future.
Community Forum - October 2, 2018 @ Freeport High School Cafeteria
Regional School Unit 5 is inviting the public to a forum on October 2, 2018 for the release of results from a community survey intended to help form a new vision and strategic plan for the district.
The surveys were distributed online and on paper to community members of all ages during the spring. The surveys asked community members a range of questions about what they feel the district’s strengths and weaknesses are, as well as priorities for the RSU moving forward.
The district received more than 1,200 completed surveys from parents, students, teachers, administrators and other residents of Durham, Freeport and Pownal.
A 10-person RSU5 strategic planning committee is working to develop a new vision and strategic plan to guide the district for the next 5-7 years, and the public input gathered through the community surveys, as well as a series of forums, will be used to create them.
At a forum on October 2, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at Freeport High School, committee representatives will share the results of the surveys and seek additional input from the public, who will be asked to help find common themes and priorities among the survey responses.
The last strategic plan for the district was completed in 2010.
The 10-person committee includes RSU5 Superintendent Becky Foley, RSU5 school board members Lindsay Sterling and Valy Steverlynck, community members from all three towns, as well as additional representatives from the student body, faculty, building administration and central office.

Additionally, the committee will facilitate community forums to gather public input in person. These forums will be held on the following dates:

May 16, 2018 - 6:30 p.m. - Durham Community School Cafeteria
We will share the feedback in the fall and discuss how that input will be used to create a plan for the future of the district. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and make your voice heard.
RSU5 Strategic Planning Advisory Committee
Committee Charge: Whereas the RSU5 Board of Directors recognizes the importance of strategic planning to align the mission and the vision of the District as well as to anticipate and plan for annual and multi-year goals to support and enhance a world-class educational system, we hereby charge the RSU5 Strategic Planning Advisory Committee (SPAC) to oversee a process to create an updated RSU5 Strategic Plan.
The SPAC will reference a multitude of documents as resource materials to influence their decision-making. These include but are not limited to the following:
- Previous strategic plans from RSU5 and other school districts;
- RSU5 Mission and Vision documents;
- RSU5 District Scorecard; and
- Other related materials.
Meetings: Meetings of the SPAC will typically be held the first Wednesday of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Superintendent’s Office (17 West Street, Freeport). Additional meetings will be added if necessary.
