Reading

Foundational Skills

Phonics and Word Recognition

  • Decodes by applying grade level phonics and word analysis skills
  • Reads grade-appropriate high frequency words by sight

Fluency

  •  Reads grade level texts fluently with appropriate rate and expression

Writing Production

  • Handwrites with appropriate alignment and size, form, neatness and spacing

Spelling

  • Spells many long vowel pattern words correctly

 

Narrative Reading

Comprehends Stories

  • Retell stories, including key details, such as setting and plot
  • Determines the central message, lesson or moral
  • Identifies characters' points of view and how they respond to challenges
  • Compares and contrasts two or more versions of the same story                 

 

Informational Reading

Comprehends Informational Text

  • Identifies the main topics throughout a multi-paragraph piece
  • Determines the meaning of unknown words in context
  • Uses various text features to locate key facts or information
  • Compares and contrasts important points within two texts on the same topic                     

 

Writing

Narrative Writing

Structure

  • Writing is organized according to purpose with a beginning, middle, and end

Development

  • Pieces are elaborated to include a variety of details, talk, and action

Informational Writing

Structure

  • Writing teaches some important points about a subject, includes transition words, each part tells different information about the topic.

Development

  • Writing includes different kinds of information such as facts, definitions, details and attempts to include expert words.

Opinion Writing

Structure

  • Writing includes an opinion identifying likes and dislikes and provides reasons.
  • Pieces have different parts; and a lot of lines for each part.

Development

  • Writing includes at least two reasons and at least a few sentences about each one.

Speaking and Listening

Comprehension and Collaboration

  • Participates in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
  • Follows agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listens to others with care, speaks one at a time about the topic and text under discussion).
  • Builds on others' talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.
  • Asks for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
  • Recounts or describes key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
  • Asks and answers questions about what a speaker is saying in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue.

 

Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

  • Tells a story or recounts an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaks audibly in coherent sentences.
  • Creates audio recordings of stories or poems; adds drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
  • Produces complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.
