Coronavirus Letter from Superintendent Foley

March 1, 2020

Dear RSU5 Families & Staff,

March is here, and our students and staff are still grappling with the flu. With the outbreak of Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) worldwide, this has added to the concerns about the safety of our students’ health. Thus far, there are currently no reported cases in Maine and the chance of an outbreak is low. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is responding by working with the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) to provide frequent guidance and updates to all districts throughout Maine. Additionally, we have a District Safety Committee that meets regularly to ensure the safety and health of all our students and staff.

Meetings with the Superintendent

Superintendent Foley and Assistant Superintendent Alexander will be "hanging out" at three upcoming events. This is just a time to stop by and chat about whatever topics are of interest to you regarding our schools and educating our students! Dates/times are below!

Important Information about sending notes to School

In an effort to reduce the number of “pink notes” our office staff is writing every day for students’ after school plans, beginning next week we will be notifying bus drivers once with a list of students using transportation at the start of a given activity. For example, when “Girls on the Run at the YMCA” or “Soccer Practice at Hunter Road Field” begins, parents should notify the MLS office of their child’s participation and state which days of the week the child will attend and the program end date. We will notify the bus driver, and thereafter no notes need to be sent to school. For the duration of the program, we will rely on parents to remind their child of the afterschool plan.

With regard to RSU 5 Rec programs held at MLS after school, the office will have a roster of participants and parents only need to remind their child about the activity. No note to the office is required.

We will continue to ask for and provide “pink notes” for any child taking a different bus to another location other than home. We will also continue to ask for notes when a regular plan for pick up or drop off changes on any given day.

Please remember to put your child’s full name, teacher’s name and a legible signature on all notes coming to school. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office.
