4/10/2020 Update

This week we got the news we really did not want to hear.  We were all holding out hope that we would get to return to school in May or June.  I understand why the commissioner of education made the decision she did, but it is still not what we wanted to hear.  So with the new reality in Maine to finish the school year online, we will continue to focus on improving our instruction for our students.

Online Update!!

Education has never seen a more drastic change in such a short period of time in our country.  Freeport Middle School is working very hard to adjust our teaching and learning to fit the new reality.  We have now completed one week of online learning. We are always reflecting on our practice and trying to get better.  Please feel free to reach out to us to give feedback.  We have created the following website to help put our online learning information in one place. Coronavirus Letter from Superintendent Foley

March 1, 2020

Dear RSU5 Families & Staff,

March is here, and our students and staff are still grappling with the flu. With the outbreak of Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) worldwide, this has added to the concerns about the safety of our students’ health. Thus far, there are currently no reported cases in Maine and the chance of an outbreak is low. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is responding by working with the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) to provide frequent guidance and updates to all districts throughout Maine. Additionally, we have a District Safety Committee that meets regularly to ensure the safety and health of all our students and staff.

Meetings with the Superintendent

Superintendent Foley and Assistant Superintendent Alexander will be "hanging out" at three upcoming events. This is just a time to stop by and chat about whatever topics are of interest to you regarding our schools and educating our students! Dates/times are below!

Mugs & Muffins: February 27 at PES 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Dessert Discussion: March 10 at FHS 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Afternoon Tea: April 9 at DCS from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Fund Raising

Freeport Middle School is currently doing our one major fundraiser for the school year.  100% of the profits from the Magazine/Cookie drive go to fund field trips, experiential learning and hands-on learning opportunities for our kids.  We receive 40-60% of the sales from the magazine/cookie drive.  If you are not needing to renew your magazine subscriptions or want cookies and just want to make a donation, you can send a check into FMS or just make a donation on this link to Freeport Middle School.  We would greatly appreciate it.

Summer News

It is now the middle of August and all too fast it will be the end of summer and time to return to school.  I would like to welcome back all of our returning students and all of our new students and families to Freeport Middle School.  We are very excited about our upcoming school year.

Students will receive a paper copy of an updated schedule on their first day of school.  On the first day of school all 6th-grade students will go to the cafeteria when they arrive at school and their teachers will meet them there.  The 7th-grade students will all start in the 7th-grade pod. The 8th-grade students will all start in the gym. If you log into PowerSchool you can also see an updated draft of your schedule (there may still be some changes prior to day 1).  Sixth-grade parents can use their 5th-grade login for PowerSchool to see their middle school schedule. If you have forgotten your password, please call the middle school office. If you have any questions regarding your child’s schedule, please contact Phyllis Latham, our guidance counselor at   If you have forgot your PowerSchool username or password, please contact Mrs. Decker at 865-6051, she will return to the office on Monday August 19th.

Student Schedules

We are currently working on finishing up all of the student schedules in PowerSchool.  We will send out an email in early August to let you know when you can check your schedule.  We will hand you a paper copy on the first day of school.  All 6th grades will start the first day of school in the cafeteria to meet their advisory teacher and get their schedule.  7th-grade students will start in the 7th-grade locker area to get their schedules.  All 8th-grade students will start in the gym.
