7-5-20 Reopening Update from Superintendent Foley

July 5, 2020

Dear RSU 5 Families,

Hope you found a way to celebrate the 4th in a safe, but fun way!

Thank you for filling out the recent survey where we sought to gather some information from you in case we need to be in a “hybrid” model at any point next year. I want to stress that no decisions about the beginning of school have been made, and it will be unlikely that anything will be decided before August 1. We are planning for three scenarios (full remote, partial remote, full return).

Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Students,

Summer has started and I hope everyone is enjoying the great weather.  At some point in the summer, we will all have to start thinking about September and coming back to school. We feel it is very important for students to continue to read throughout the summer.   There is a different summer reading assignment for each grade.  If you have questions about the assignments or books, please reach out directly to the teacher listed on the assignment.  There are books for grades 6-8 at the middle school to borrow.  The public library has curbside pickup now if you request a book and is hopefully scheduled to open soon.

Laptop and book returns

The school is open daily from 8-3pm.  Please return any materials, books, uniforms or laptops to the school. The front doors are open, and you can just leave your returned items in the plastic crates in the hallway by the office.

6/15/2020 - Parent Email

Dear Freeport Middle School Families,

We at Freeport Middle School are saddened by the death of George Floyd. His death has had a profound impact on discussions about race and injustice in our country. It has sparked a deep and broad reaction in our nation and the world. As demonstrators across the country protest social injustice, it is important that we at Freeport Middle School also reflect on how George Floyd’s death has affected our community and our students.  Although we believe that Freeport Middle School offers a safe and welcoming environment for all children, it is time that we examine the extent to which we foster a sense of respect and belonging for all students.  This summer our staff will be looking to assess and implement practices that support equality and inclusion. Our plan is to review Freeport Middle School’s curriculum, activities, and events and make substantive changes that will support inclusive practices for all students.  If you have feedback on this, please feel free to share your experiences and ideas.

4/10/2020 Update

This week we got the news we really did not want to hear.  We were all holding out hope that we would get to return to school in May or June.  I understand why the commissioner of education made the decision she did, but it is still not what we wanted to hear.  So with the new reality in Maine to finish the school year online, we will continue to focus on improving our instruction for our students.

Coronavirus Letter from Superintendent Foley

March 1, 2020

Dear RSU5 Families & Staff,

March is here, and our students and staff are still grappling with the flu. With the outbreak of Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) worldwide, this has added to the concerns about the safety of our students’ health. Thus far, there are currently no reported cases in Maine and the chance of an outbreak is low. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is responding by working with the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) to provide frequent guidance and updates to all districts throughout Maine. Additionally, we have a District Safety Committee that meets regularly to ensure the safety and health of all our students and staff.

Meetings with the Superintendent

Superintendent Foley and Assistant Superintendent Alexander will be "hanging out" at three upcoming events. This is just a time to stop by and chat about whatever topics are of interest to you regarding our schools and educating our students! Dates/times are below!

Mugs & Muffins: February 27 at PES 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Dessert Discussion: March 10 at FHS 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Afternoon Tea: April 9 at DCS from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Fund Raising

Freeport Middle School is currently doing our one major fundraiser for the school year.  100% of the profits from the Magazine/Cookie drive go to fund field trips, experiential learning and hands-on learning opportunities for our kids.  We receive 40-60% of the sales from the magazine/cookie drive.  If you are not needing to renew your magazine subscriptions or want cookies and just want to make a donation, you can send a check into FMS or just make a donation on this link to Freeport Middle School.  We would greatly appreciate it.
