Community Forum on RSU5's Strategic Plan - October 2nd @ Freeport High School Cafeteria

Regional School Unit 5 is inviting the public to a forum on October 2, 2018 for the release of results from a community survey intended to help form a new vision and strategic plan for the district.

The surveys were distributed online and on paper to community members of all ages during the spring. The surveys asked community members a range of questions about what they feel the district’s strengths and weaknesses are, as well as priorities for the RSU moving forward.

The district received more than 1,200 completed surveys from parents, students, teachers, administrators and other residents of Durham, Freeport and Pownal.

A 10-person RSU5 strategic planning committee is working to develop a new vision and strategic plan to guide the district for the next 5-7 years, and the public input gathered through the community surveys, as well as a series of forums, will be used to create them.

At a forum on October 2, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at Freeport High School, committee representatives will share the results of the surveys and seek additional input from the public, who will be asked to help find common themes and priorities among the survey responses.

The last strategic plan for the district was completed in 2010.

The 10-person committee includes RSU5 Superintendent Becky Foley, RSU5 school board members Lindsay Sterling and Valy Steverlynck, community members from all three towns, as well as additional representatives from the student body, faculty, building administration and central office.

Welcome Back Message from Superintendent Foley

August 21, 2018

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year!  I hope your summer has been relaxing, and you have discovered ways to stay cool in Maine’s record summer heat. The heat is one means of forcing us to take some well needed downtime as it requires us to take things a bit easier.

Our work this year will continue to focus on district and building goals. Our district strategic planning committee will continue the work begun last year and concentrate on creating a new strategic plan to be Board adopted by the end of the year. Much work was done districtwide last year in creating assessments for teacher evaluation. We will continue to revise and refine the assessments as needed, but our overarching objective is to continue to implement best practices that will lead to improved student achievement at all levels.

One change that we feel will have a positive impact on student learning is the new teacher contract that was settled in late May which extends the student learning day by ten minutes. This equates to approximately an additional week of learning time and is more aligned to the length of the student learning day in surrounding districts. This additional time may impact your child’s bus schedule. The bus schedule is posted on the district website and can be accessed HERE.

I hope you enjoy the remaining days of August! I look forward to our year together as we continue our work towards providing a world class education for all of our students.

Becky Foley
Superintendent of RSU 5 Schools

Satisfaction Survey - Executive Summary

Back in February, many of you filled out the Satisfaction Survey in order to give input how you feel our schools are performing. An executive summary has been created and shared with the Board. You can see these results at the following link Executive Summary of Satisfaction Survey. Thanks to those who took the time to fill this out. The results will be used by schools and their leadership teams to reflect on how to continuously improve our schools and learning for our students of RSU5. April 11, 2018 Board Workshop on Proficiency

Dear Parents,

Happy Spring! As you know, our ninth-grade students are expected to be the first class to graduate with proficiency-based diplomas. The State continues to work on the proposed amendment to the statute. I just found out late yesterday that the Governor may be submitting a bill to replace the current statute. As far as I know, the content of that bill has not been released to the public in order to compare it to the current statute. When the Education Committee met yesterday, they tabled their discussion on proficiency-based education until their next meeting.

We are currently compiling feedback from parents, students, and staff about how the new grading system is going at the high school. At the April 11th Board workshop at Pownal Elementary School, we will share the results with the Board, give a brief overview of implementation of PBE in RSU5, and make recommendations for going forward.

Last Day of School - One Hour Extension to School Day April 2-6, 2018

Dear Parents,

On March 21, 2018 the School Board voted to make up our most recent snow day by adding an hour to the school day during the week of April 2-6. Maine requires 175 school days, but they do allow schools to add five hours to existing school days and count it as one full school day.  This means the last day of school will be Friday, June 22nd, barring any other snow days, instead of Monday, June 25th.  Each school will extend their school day for one hour during this week, so your child will be arriving home one hour later.  After school activities will be adjusted during that week.  If your child cannot stay an additional hour it will be considered an excused absence.

If you have any specific questions about your child's schedule, please contact the school.

Thank you,

Dr. Becky J. Foley
Superintendent of Schools

Strategic Plan Survey and Forums

RSU 5 is developing a new strategic plan to guide education in the district for years to come, and the RSU wants the people of Durham, Freeport and Pownal to weigh in.
A committee is working to draft a new mission statement, vision and strategic plan for the RSU and have developed a short, eight-question survey to learn more about how their friends and neighbors of all ages and backgrounds feel about our local schools, as well as how they want education to look in the district in the future.

Take the Survey!
