Guidance

Dear Pownal Elementary School Families,

My name is Cathryn Bigley and I am excited to be the new school counselor at Pownal Elementary School. This is my twelfth year as a school counselor and I hold a B.S. in Psychology from Springfield College in Massachusetts, and a M.A. in Counseling Psychology, School Counseling, from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon.

As a school counselor, I have countless opportunities to do creative and beneficial work with children and their families. I value education and hope to convey my love of learning to children. Teaching guidance lessons is an enjoyable part of my day. Topics include skills for academic success, empathy, how to handle strong feelings and problem solving. I incorporate children’s literature, art, music, team-building activities and role-plays into my lessons which makes learning interesting and fun. Students will learn how to be caring, responsible and how to solve just about any problem that comes their way. I will send you letters at the beginning of each unit that will describe what your child(ren) will learn and the topics we will cover.

In addition to weekly guidance lessons, I provide short term individual and group counseling to children, as well as referrals to outside providers. Topics include how to make and keep friends, grief and loss, academic success, anger management, changes at home, worries and anxiety, all while encouraging communication between children and the people who love them the most.

It is a privilege to help children succeed in school and in life. I look forward to meeting you and helping your child(ren) be successful at Pownal Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Cathryn Bigley, MA, NCC
