State of Maine Empowers Freeport Middle School with #TeachWithTech Grant for Innovative Drone Learning

In a move to foster innovative learning, the Maine Department of Education has awarded Mrs. Alvarez, a STEM educator at Freeport Middle School, with the #TeachWithTech Grant. This grant aims to elevate the learning experience program by funding opportunities to MLTI educators who want to bring technology into their MLTI schools in a way that is innovative, impactful, and intriguing.

FMS students embarked on a unique educational journey, learning to code the indoor drones in an immersive simulated environment set on the red planet, Mars. The simulated coding exercises not only engaged students in problem-solving but also offered a taste of interplanetary exploration right from their STEM classroom.

The highlight of this innovative program was the transition from the virtual to the real, as students took their coded missions from the Martian landscape to their classroom. Witnessing the drones lift off and navigate the physical space brought a hands-on dimension to their coding skills, fostering a deeper understanding of technology's practical applications.

One 6th Grader expressed her excitement about the grant, stating, "Learning to code the drones in the simulated environment was cool and challenging by itself, but seeing them actually lift off the ground was amazing.  I loved all of it and I learned so much.”

Freeport Middle School is committed to preparing students for the demands of a rapidly advancing technological landscape. The #TeachWithTech Grant is a launchpad for the future leaders in technology and innovation.
